Greek Folk : Coin Armor

This costume inspired my final textile samples, the numerous embellishement, vibrant colour and various patterns were used as I felt they represented the idea of traditional dress as a protection like a armor but also like something overwhelming, so deeply entwined with cultural symbols that it has the potential of suppressing the identity/personality of the person wearing it.

I like how geometric garment shapes contrast with traditonal dress delicate embroideries.

Greek Folk : Folded scarfs

The shape of the folded scarf, adds an almost graphic modern aesthetic to the traditional dress, it is a intersting contrast.

Greek Folk : A group of women

There is almost a theatrical aspect to this image, supositevely taken in daily life, it looks like it was staged, the women are posing confidentely for the camera. This vision of staged photography reminds me of the traditional dress, a costume representing the distorted reality of a culture, only on certain occasions, like if the all village became a theater during cultural ceremonies and events.

Greek Folk : A woman

This image caught my attention, the caracther seems strong and anapoligetic, the posture express a certain condesendance, a confidence well portrayed by the greek folk traditional dress she is wearing : Embroideries paired with imposing jewelery almost ressembling a armor, the head is trapped in fabric like if the woman was wearing a helmet.

The costume was embellished, The net with coins, consists of a beaded net decorated with rows of coins and covers the chest and stomach, recalling a breastplate worn in ancient times. The coin net makes me think of an armor, it relates with the idea of the traditional dress worn as something protective

The brigth shade of red aswell as the fall of the thread would be interesting to think of as a embellishement it adds dimension to the textile or fashion design concept.

Greek Folk : Two women

The heavy embroidery on the skirt is the main point of attention moving away the focus from the top half of the body, moving embellishement around the garment is a way to create a interesting design aesthetic.

Greek Folk : Embroidery

The embroidery seems delicate, I like the colours used the red, white and gold compliment each other well. It is interesting to see the embroidery uses the same color palette as the costume from head to toe. The white and red fabric enhanced by gold jewelery.

I liked the ample shapes of the costume, surrounding the woman like a form of protection. I feel traditional dress is a form of armor, a distinctive sign of communitarianism. Through the folded shapes, detailed embroideries, jewellery... It offers a clear message of belonging to a culture by almost suppresing the individual identity of the wearer. In a traditional costume, I feel the person is more a part of a culture then themselves.
